Squawk Box August 13 Conference call organized by Alec Saunders
Conference Call Details
Agenda
First up - Chrysler is intending to sell a mobile EVDO router for the car. You can turn your car into a mobile hotspot. Is there a market for it? Is it wise? Would you buy one?

And what about the story that VC firm EDF is suing TheFunded over a negative review. Is this TheFunded's watershed moment? Or is the run over for them.

And finally, there's an interesting debate going on in the web right now about whether tech companies need PR anymore. We've got a number of bloggers and tech founders on the line usually. This will probably make for an interesting discussion.

I think Scoble has gotten to a place where he doesn't get the real world anymore.
Darn right James.

Large is definately not best

Many PR outfits do little more than just pass on the Press Release - the better outfits add comment (spin?) to the releases to ensure that they achieve best coverage
indeed
techies pay little attention to eye candy
That's fabulous James! Congrats!!!

Not quite a headline - but still on the Front Cover....

influencers and conversationalists -- I like the distinction!
and only people LIKE Robert have that reach
most people won't get that notoriety
But he is alone in that
Both Ken and I get unusual requests and we both pay no attention at all. It's daunting without filters.
his point about developers pitching developers was pretty narrowly focused
yes
scoble is.
he's narrowly focused
Lots of tech "products" are tied into some platform. Maybe PR is not very valuable in such situations because there is a built in connection.... a context in which the product can be understood and discovered. Otherwise, I don't think PR can be avoided.
great so get it out there but the problem is how far reaching do you want to be? And without people like Andy there are limitations
why don't those of you who use them tell us YOUR opinion
James Body said:
Yes!
James Body said:
I would say....
James Body said:
Do we need Andy?
We were just having this conversation about how important it is to have the ability to speak truthfully and whether if you only give good press how valuable are you?
I used Joiku Spot and it worked GREAT
i tethered my iphone via WiFi to my E71 and Made a Truphone call
you better tell HIM then LMAO!
hm
AT&T prohibits it for iPhone, Sheryl
Sorry to go off topic
I just asked Ken and he said he thinks the US carriers support tethering and don't seem to have any issue with it and in fact they offeer instructions for how to on their sites

Brilliant if doing a trade show - an not wanting to pay the HUGE internet rental that shows charge
James Body said:
I think that the 10 bucks a day deal from Avis is a great way of getting a trial run
Within a short time, all the passengers in the typical car are going to have broadband cellphones. What's the point of having another device in the car itself?
why can't they just add it to the features...hide the cost in the price?
yeah James
James Body said:
Main application is traffic control
I can't tell you the number of times in Canada my neighbors got speeding tickets
Why would someone have this car EVDO device if they already have a 3g or 4G cellphone?
James Body said:
In UK we have cameras on all main routes that scan vehicle number plates
Now... that's why I need it! I drive too fast...

"... patented TRU Technology!"

Who is going to supply chrysler with the signal? Sprint? Verizon?

James Body said:
I've done it too
We miss you Ken!
they are already putting tv into cars (at least family vans). Why not do wireless broadband?
Ken Camp said:
Sorry I can't be on this morning. Interesting subject. Frustrating for me that my work schedule just about makes it impossible to get on Squawkbox any more.
what is the drawback?
tv is dead... long live tv? :)

Wi-Fi in your Avis rental car
Published by Alex on Tuesday 22nd May 2007, 18:18 | Related | Filed Under
Related Posts

* No Related Post

Filed Under: Mobile Data • WiFi

Link: Avis to offer wireless Internet gear

This is an interesting one. Car hire company Avis are launching a Wi-Fi service that’ll work in your rented car, hotel room, or by the sounds of it pretty much anywhere you go. It’s US-only at the moment and is only available from a select number of locations, but it sounds like a nice idea for a service.

The new Avis Connect service, priced at $10.95 per day, can transmit a Wi-Fi signal to multiple laptops and other mobile devices at the same time.

The service is provided with a portable device developed by Autonet Mobile that gets its Internet connection from a cell phone network. The company declined to disclose which one, though the cellular technology involved suggests that it is being provided by either Verizon Wireless or Sprint Nextel Corp.

Given a choice between fiddling with mobile data and just firing up my laptop and finding the access point, I know what I’d rather do. Wonder if there’s any plans to launch a similar service in the UK?
