Call Dashboard

Squawk Box August 21 Conference call organized by Alec Saunders

Agenda
First up -- the rumours of an iTunes unlimited offering. The folks over at The Unofficial Apple Weblog published a piece this morning suggesting that Apple might offer (for perhaps $130 year) a subscription "all-you-can-eat" iphone music service, with the option to buy tracks you'd really like to keep. It's intriguing. We'll discuss the pro's and con's.

And second, there are a ton of blog postings hitting this morning about Blackberry Bold. The launch is imminent. We've got a number of Blackberry users as regulars. We're going to quize them about their upgrade plans and more.

where do you coders see the future going for mobile phone dev spaces, what's it gonna look like in 2010?

I am a HEAVY gtalk user on my BB
picture
Thomas Purves said:
I have a lot of gtalk contacts which seems to give either a pearl or a curve (on EDGE) a regular heart attack to load and keep running
picture
...but my expectations may be lower
picture
As a relatively new user in the world of smart phones...I have only had 2 BB's. The first went back because it simply kept rebooting. The second I use today and with little exception has been spectacular
picture
me neither, but i have general stability issues with all the platforms, Sheryl
picture
That's interesting...I have not found gtalk a problem on BB
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
so the future is really android vs apple
picture
Thomas Purves said:
sometimes I can run the gtalk BB app for several minutes at a time between crashes or lockups
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
so big slow and non agile meaning lame and not as sexy as apple? no gold rush happening there eh?
picture
Thomas Purves said:
Ya you just have to ask rick segal for the money
picture
definitely one of the frustrating things about BB is going to a browser page and being told your browser doesn't support ...
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
yeah but does the blackberry have an app store? can anyone dev for that platform?
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
hmmm
picture
I think that's hard for Steve to do
picture
Thomas Purves said:
how fast is the processor on the bold compared to the iphone? that is likely the limiting factor for flash?
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
are blackberry users the same or even related to iphone users? who is a blackberry user vs an iphone user
picture
HAHA!
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
depends on the coverage
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
he's doing the... "and boom..."
picture
Thomas Purves said:
manufacturing of the bold seems to be staggering out the door
picture
that name is NOT a household name
picture
Thomas Purves said:
they probably don"t have enough phones yet
picture
Only Jim has held one as far as I know
picture
I'm so jealous of Jim!

Dan Rockwell said:
true, but the message it sends stings, here is this promise, this cool thing, you love that song, and btw, it will expire in 178 days, enjoy it while you can
picture
But there are always ways around that...especially if you're putting this stuff on your iphone/ipod
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
songs that time out?!? thats typical marketing trap crap, i cant wait for people to hack that
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
that would suck!!
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
its a net to capture people, and locks them into that experience, its apple's first MMORPG, subscription based net
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
a net
picture
Thomas Purves said:
this would be a carrier issue more than apple, chewing 3g capacity for no incremental revenue while competing with every carriers in-house music offerings and music stores
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
its unlimited on apples terms not yours

Dan Rockwell said:
2008 is turning into the year of the cloud

Dan Rockwell said:
sadly 3G was a death sentence for pandora, before the 3G phone we just used it on wifi and it flew under the radar just fine
picture
Thomas Purves said:
recently increased webcasting royalty rates in the US are the problem
picture
Dan Rockwell said:
lotta music doom news lately, muxtape got the axe, pandora next?
