Squawk Box August 27 - Mobility, mobility, mobility! Conference call organized by Alec Saunders
Conference Call Details
Agenda
There's plenty to talk about in the world of mobile today.

The iPhone 3G is close to outnumbering first generation iPhones by selling 6 million units since launch a scant two months ago. It took the first iPhone over a year to sell six million.

Meanwhile, Android phones are still on the drawing boards as sketches of the T-Mobile G1 leak out.

And how about the fact that SmartPhone and PocketPC magazine has announced that their windows mobile focused publication is... ceasing publication. Bad news for the Windows Mobile market?

And finally... more New nokia N-Series handsets. The N79 and N85 were announced this week. Coincident with that was a great piece by Olga Kharif in Business Week on mobile VoIP... at the same time as Nokia is pulling the SIP stack from their new handsets.

Just hate the idea of no sim

William Volk said:
Apple's 'carrier' deals are as important as the iPhone itself.
Thanks Dan :)

Sheryl.. I think Nokia has far few models than other manufacturers. They are definitely some of the most advanced. But from the current studies we have on going, manufacturers struggle with figuring out what to make, trust me they are tired of making multiple models, but carriers are dictating to them to carter to multiple persona type users. Carriers have a hand in deciding what we use, thats a perspective I think we're not considering, we assume the phone makers call all the shots.
Alec...is what you mean the ability for all voip clients to speak to each other not unlike traditional telephone services have the ability to speak to each other?
Dan...do you really think that? Maybe I'm just out of the loop but with the number we have....seems to me there are a large number of nokia phones.

The HSBC story re iPhone has been quelled by HSBC personnel.
Dan Rockwell said:
they should do that, but its not up to them, as far as i understand it, and this is based on a study were doing with samsung now, the carrier has alot of influence over the manufactuer
Dan Rockwell said:
nokia is one of the few manufacters that doesnt make a bazillion models i think they are semi elitst, with apple being the most elite
Hi Jim!
Jim Courtney said:
good morning ..

lead users
good morning Jim
thanks Andy! :)
Dan Rockwell said:
true
yeah - there are 4 N-95 models
they did the n95
interesting thought...why do people choose anything other than qwerty? I'm simply curious
Dan Rockwell said:
who commands who, do carriers tell phone makers what to make? or vice versa
well why not 5 different n series and 2 different e series....qwerty versus not?
is it truly a good value to have a bazillion different models?
Why does Nokia not just choose 5 models and simply improve on them annually instead of keep coming out with new models?
Dan Rockwell said:
there was a news bit yesterday about a Yamaha music phone, see if i can find the link, but makes me wonder if manufacterers are thinking are attempting to build more hardware/specific functionality into the phone vs going software
Jon Arnold said:
Have to drop off now all, it's been a great call!
William Volk said:
Why can't they pull off a software ecosystem? N-Gauge launched with what, SIX applications?
William Volk said:
Nokia makes awesome handsets.

NSTL fees, handset rentals porting
William Volk said:
The cost is more like $30k
William Volk said:
not to mention that there was NO WAY for a small publisher to ever get a BREW app on deck
William Volk said:
Verizon never got this
William Volk said:
selling through
William Volk said:
Yep
William Volk said:
The low cost of publishing and marketing of an iPhone app is simply unmatched. Compare the launch of a app across several territories and several carriers on iPhone vs Symbian
Dan Rockwell said:
windows mobile needs to seriously reinvent itself in the wake of the app store, publications are gonna go from windows mobile mags to apple iphone dev mags
Dan Rockwell said:
advertising is like the last ditch effort to try and monetize technology off people, its less about providing value

quote of the day - "Announcements are great, everyone should make them"
I don't find it too difficult either, Bill
William Volk said:
Apple is ok with WiFi VOIP
William Volk said:
FYI: I don't have a problem typing on it and my fingers are on the large side
That's an amazing event, if true Jonathan.
William Volk said:
This was do or die time
For many, an iPhone is a natural progression from an iPod.
William Volk said:
Remember, Apple HAD to do this or face losing the entire iPod marketplace
Can't vouch for the accuracy of the rumour but I read that HSBC are placing a significant order. If true perhaps it is a business phone now.
What sort of timeline are we looking at before it becomes considered business phone?
William Volk said:
The ecology of the App Store is simply unmatched. No competition
And when you want something new you go to the iTunes store. Simple!
Good morning Jon!!!!
