Call Dashboard

Squawk Box September 9 - guests from DEMO Conference call organized by Alec Saunders

Agenda
Join us this morning with two of my favorite presenters from DEMO yesterday.

We'll have Richard Archuleta of Plastic Logic, creators of flexible plastic display technologies. Yesterday they unveiled their eReader, which looks fabulous.

In addition, we'll have Justin Hayward of Telnic, the creators of the .tel top level domain. A .tel domain allows you to add business card style information -- telephone numbers, addresses, and so on -- to the DNS system, once and for all resolving the issue of where the telecom directory lives. Long time readers of the blog will know I've been predicting that something like this would occur since writing the Voice 2.0 Manifesto.

Guess price as usual will depend on demand and wholesale price

Dan York said:
I can imagine that some of the registrars will charge a LOT for these domains initially.

Ian F. Hood said:
prices?

Dan York said:
But what is to prevent a squatter from registering "danyork.tel" and then saying that I can have it for $XXXX? (Nothing that I can hear)
picture
Phil Wolff said:
Where do all those ACLs live?
picture
Ian F. Hood said:
I am guessing that the domain name connection does in provide distribution and a business model for the app.. and a level of ownership that exceeds the company itself.
picture
Dan York said:
Right... anyone else could create such a service that queried the DNS tree and run it as "findmeonline.com". The advantage these folks have is that they can brand ".tel".

Tom Orr said:
Excellent question Phil - and one we all need answered

Phil Wolff said:
How do you envision users to manage faceted identity, so my wife sees one set of contact vectors, while my girlfriend sees another?
picture
sounds good, but I have my doubts that any domain I would want will be taken by a bulk script ran at 12:01 am from the Caribean
picture
Tom Orr said:
What they've done is make it easy for non-geeks

Tom Orr said:
one would hope Todd

Is the EULA going to forbid bulk registration or resale, again to help with squatters

the ultimate landrush Dan LOL

So if I'm an IPR lawyer, I'm going to gear up to get ready for fighting all of this... ;-) (Hmmm... maybe I should change careers...)

What's to prevent spammers from harvesting email addresses?

Tom Orr said:
Lawyers make big bucks litigating over cybersquatting.

Dan York said:
:-)
picture
what are you doing about squatters?
picture
Dan York said:
To go along with that, how will you prevent the slimeball domain name squatters from registering all sorts of names and then putting them up for auction, etc?
picture
Jim Courtney said:
they have a "Landrush" stage in their launch schedule: http://www.telnic.org/launch-landing.html

So are registrars responsible for authentication?.......or what type of authentication is employed?

Ian F. Hood said:
You are acting as the 'root' for all our contact info/media

Mark - this sounds like your Internet presence management concept
