Squawk Box September 24 - Jim Weaver, Paid Interviews Conference call organized by Alec Saunders
Conference Call Details
Agenda
Today we're talking with PaidInterviews, a company that is transforming the traditional recruiting model by disintermediating the recruiter with a social networking platform. I liken what they're doing to what Expedia did to the travel industry. We'll have CEO Jim Weaver on the line with us, at 11 AM on the SquawkBox.

recommendation: pick an industry (e.g. games) or an occupation (sales) and focus on that for a year.
Phil Wolff said:
observation: the risky part of this business is getting critical mass. the same way nobody wants to stay in an empty room, you need many relevant search results for every visitor. bootstrapping job/candidate inventory is hard, especially when you look at sites with heavy profiling for both sides (e.g. wedding match sites).
What about negotiating salaries?
Bye Frank!

Thanks great call - gotta scoot!
Phil Wolff said:
people are looking for work on Craigslist, especially in major metro areas.
Frank Abrams said:
LI is basically a recruitment and jobsite
coming to that Frank
Phil Wolff said:
ah, cool. thx.
got it Phil. I'll rephrase
Frank Abrams said:
what's your marketing budget and who owns the co.?
Phil Wolff said:
it was a marketing question, really. you may have a better economic model, but that doesn't help if nobody knows about your site.
Phil Wolff said:
Q. US laws are very strict re: discrimination based on age, gender, race. Yet photos and videos reveal this information very early in the hiring process. how do you protect employers from litigation?
William Volk said:
Phil, I asked the same thing. They allow employers to turn off the photos and videos
Bye Gillian!
Phil Wolff said:
do you have employers reverse engineering contact information? a quick search on google will find the small set of people who share that a work history.
William Volk said:
If you're a recruiter, I apologize in advance, but I have seen some bad/crazy stuff on both sides of the hiring process. At one point the video game company I was at set a policy for a fixed fee and recruiters would simply walk away rather than do the best thing for the candidate.
Bye.
I am going to have to duck out Alec...
William Volk said:
Or recruiters calling a present job for references when you aren't interested in leaving.
Phil Wolff said:
there are 8 gazillion job sites, including roll-your-own. what are you doing to attract talent to your site?
Companies only pay (you and the candidate) if they successfully hire? Can they pay to create postings or employer profiles?
Of those seeking applicants, what is their response to the idea of paid interviews? Any idea how comfortable they are?
Frank Abrams said:
who owns the co.?
Follow to Frank's question: do they have any particular industry or candidate profile where they have better traction.
Frank Abrams said:
why aren't the benefits of the site and matching enough why do you have to promise a paid interview fee?
Frank Abrams said:
any metrics on # of jobseekers so far?
Any plans to partner with recruiters?
Are they focused on active job seekers? Any strategy to get passive candidates in the mix?
William Volk said:
Also, isn't there a danger with candidate photos that companies open themselves up to discrimination charges?
William Volk said:
Some industries, video games being a prime example, now have their own dedicated job sites/profile sites. How will you address that?
It's an ego thing, though Alec. I no longer look 35 in that picture :)
Yeah he did...at a jazz club we went to :) Thanks Alec
