Squawk Box October 15 - the state of Voice 2.0 Conference call organized by Alec Saunders
Conference Call Details
Agenda
One of the stories making the rounds over the last couple of weeks has been the failure of Voice 2.0 startups. Fierce wireless characterized EQO's staff cuts reported October 12 as "the latest of the Voice / Phone 2.0 facing imminent disaster", while techvibes and GigaOm chose a similar tone.

This morning we're going to chat about the state of Voice 2.0, and some of the successes and failures in the space.

in my experience the people using difficult apps are either true tech geeks or people who would like to consider themselves that in their little worlds
Ultimately it's all about what does it mean for the customer? If the customer experience isn't simple then it will eventually become an irrelevance, or at best very niche.
100%
Cutting through the bs is NICE

Np 8 is looking good!
Alwaysoncarl said:
agreed
That is true, Alec. Simpler is better because while all the tech guru's can get it, new users will be daunted.

Here is an interesting little exercise that demonstrates the rise and demise of VoIP companies - examine the VoIP News Top 20 Infuencer list from last year - http://www.voip-news.com/feature/top-20-influencers-2007-010208/ - and see how many of them are STILL in the business?

You can see a video of how Fonolo on the iPhone works nicely with the dialing function here: http://www.shaiberger.com/?p=124

Skype is about to announce new developer program with much deeper access to basic functionality.
Sheesh there is so much break up can't hear it and make heads or tails...
James Body said:
Tim - you are right - Skype IS making attempts to evolve

As such, they will survive!
Don't you think Skype is on a different planet than the rest? I mean in some ways they have become quite different from the rest of the VoIP world
James Body said:
Good stuff - but struggling with the issues of tariffing - cos it competes head on with the more traditional services
James Body said:
BT IP Exchange is what you need Carl!

The point is - they DO have a revenue model
James Body said:
DeFi - interesting revenue model
;)
James Body said:
The one exception to this would appear to be Fring - who STILL do not have a business model - have NO revenues - yet still continue to grind on!
James Body said:
Warren is absolutely right - those companies with revenue streams stand some chance of surviving - those that do not just will not
James Body said:
Jangl guys went to Jajah
James Body said:
I do not like showing up on the call...is it fixable?
