Squawk Box October 20: Virtual Worlds, plus Entertainment Industry stupidity Conference call organized by Alec Saunders

Agenda
There's an interesting piece in the Wall Street journal Business Technology blog about whether or not virtual worlds have a place in business communication. We'll discuss that.

It's let's make fun of the entertainment industry day. Three of this morning's stories on techmeme are:

Quote Unquote records is a label that provides it's music under a creative commons license. For the last week, their website has been down, the target of an RIAA copyright complaint. Naturally, they're furious, but their ISP isn't putting the site back up.

And... Blu-ray is bombing. Because of the economic downturn, consumers simply aren't moving to the new, and more expensive, format.

And finally, the RIAA now wants to avoid trial in Maverick v. Harper. They're worried, apparently, that a trial might undermine the bedrock of their copyright infringement cases, which is that "making a file available on a P2P network" constitutes infringement.

Can these guys get any more ridiculous?

There's been a national CTO for a while. All the departmental CTOs have a dotted line to him/her.

I wonder if Toshiba would be interested in putting DVD HD into the public domain. ..

I know Vint; he serves as an advisor to my MetroCore project; he has had a number of discussions directly with Obama; which leads me to believe that may be true; also Powell's son may be reinstated at the FCC

3D worlds exploit social models of how we work in RL. Before you go into a room you get to see who is there, choose who to speak with, have aside/welcome conversations, sit with people you like/know, etc.

who's pounding away on the keys?

Another option: octopz lets you share the 3D object so everyone can manipulate the model car or camera or whatever. Think 3D whiteboard vs. 3D world.

And in other news, Business Week is reporting that Obama, if elected, may appoint Internet pioneer Vint Cerf as "CTO" - http://www.businessweek.com/bwdaily/dnflash/content/oct2008/db20081019_258155.htm?chan=top+news_top+news+index+-+temp_news+%2B+analysis
