Great talk all! :)

Lee, are we still offering news media free passes to eComm?

Jonathan in most cases I don't notice huge differences in speed of service between the two. I spent a long time on edge. But, when multi tasking it helps.

Ken Camp said:
Jonathan - That's the bigger problem. We don't have any consisten global infrastructure or cost model.

We'll repost the extended date on Stardust.

Jonathan Jensen said:
We don't have EDGE on most networks here in the UK so not had the chance to compare it.

James Body said:
Extended until 30 Jan

Jonathan Jensen said:
Ken - that's the problem. Poor implementation.

Ken Camp said:
3G is nice and powerful, but it's not a necessity to be 100% functional in conference and work mode.
picture
My boss is making me do an ROI to allow me to attend on company time despite the fact I'm paying for it all myself :-(
picture
Ken Camp said:
Jim, I'm not even a 3G user at all. I have no 3G device. EDGE is more than enough for any conference at full network speed in my experience.
picture
I'm the 3G user in our family :)

Jim Courtney said:
Ken, you have not had the bad AT&T experience of 3G in the Bay Area. I would not want to rely on that. As I said in a post last week, if you want reliable, stable, scalable GSM 3G move to Canada and get on Rogers. I speak from experience on my last two trips to CA and NV.
picture
We'll keep broadcasting it
picture
That's been our problem Lee. We want to be able to go but losing all our income made it a little difficult.

James Body said:
Multi-layer WiFi would be useful - 802.11a in adition to b/g
picture
Ken Camp said:
I agree Jonathan. I was overstating. But I never go to any conference expecting free WiFi to be anything more than a possibility. Expect the worst and prepare. I'm just saying I don't think it should be the top priority for a conference.

Tim Panton said:
Lee - talk to Boingo about WIFI - they are teaming up with skype.
picture
It's a fabulous tool. Weighs nothing, and battery lasts forever
picture
Jonathan Jensen said:
Not sure I agree Ken. I think both are needed but delivered seamlessly to the user. 3G suffers from flaky coverage, backhaul bottlenecks, limited capacity etc. I think there's life left in WiFi ...

Spot on - ETel was superb
picture
Yup -- using it for this call. I am blown away by it.
picture
I'm really looking forward to eComm
picture
Are you loving it Alec?
picture
ditch wifi and use 3g to feed the telcos and big brother
picture
My HP Mini apparently can use my 3G -- just plug in a SIM.

Tim Panton said:
3G is killer expensive for foreigners
picture
Exactly, Jonathan! Nokia was so innovative with phones but service and community has failed
picture
Ken Camp said:
WiFi is so 1999. BYOB 3G is what needs to be the norm.
picture
Jonathan Jensen said:
Nokia makes some great devices but where's the service wrap?
picture
Ken Camp said:
I think we'll see Nokia compete with Palm on the slide to the abyss.
picture
Agreed, Alec
picture
Jonathan Jensen said:
Sheryl. I agree. That's where it must be possible to switch voice into another comms method depending on presence etc.
picture
I'm mystified by Nokia, personally.
picture
Apparently Nokia doesn't play as nice and isn't as easy to work with.
picture
Ken Camp said:
Nokia missed the boat repeatedly

Jonathan Jensen said:
The Apple App Store has changed the world in terms of making it simple to add apps to a mobile device. It's made it Normob friendly. Where's Nokia here? Nowhere. Massive missed opportunity with all those S60 handsets out there.
picture
Lee, it sounds like your preference is for realtime communications, and I agree...mostly, the problem is that everyone isn't available all the time and then it becomes all about scheduling. Oh...and I agree with JB. I think you're incredible at opening dialogue and stirring consciousness in thought.

Ken Camp said:
I can't imagine Palm surviving myself. And I owned every device they ever built up through the Treo.
picture
Ken Camp said:
Not sure I agree about new knowledge. I haven't seen any new knowledge in my lifetime I don't think. But those loose, large networks put pieces of knowledge together differently. I think it's multidimensional views of existing knowledge.

Tim Panton said:
what about the palm pre ? Looks lovely from the demo.

I love my iPod Touch. Can't imagine loving anything the way I love my Bold. I can't type as fast on my Touch.
