The past few weeks have seen nVidia release sophisticated graphics processors for mobile phones, the recognition by the PC industry that the next big wave of devices will be netbook class devices, a deluge of new "smartphones" from the mobile industry, and the announcement of new cloud synchronization initiatives from Microsoft, Nokia and others.

It all seems to be pointing to a spectacular convergence of technologies, coupled to an inevitable clash of the titans as vendors battle for the spoils of this convergence.

The convergence we are talkling about (netbook/PC and phone) is not relevant. It's as big a deal as my washing machine convergence with the microwave.

Safari 4 runs HTML 5 and CSS 3 which is the same as the Pre ... have not seen a real emulator yet. Not sure the SDK is really public

OS X is modern but not new. What the future OS looks like is yet to be seen. I think RIM and Microsoft will have to upgrade to stay current

to me - all the client devices are just that, clients. The question is what is the universal client software. I kinda doubt it it the browser running on the device

Jim, you are right - 3's handsets use GSM to bridge to skype. Their netbooks +dongle though actively support skype over 3g data.

oops we are way off target. the very idea of a convereged single deivce to end this war is an anathema to us as people. It is so very 1984ish. Are we rethinking Henry Ford's Model T in any color you like as long as it's black? I think it's a specious idea that the two can, will or should converge.

My perception is that the majority of netbooks in europe are shipping with 3G from mobile operators on a monthly data plan.

I'm not sure I even agree there is a battle or will be. There are min-skirmishes ahead in ecosystem areas. I don't see any reason for or driver for a battle. I think the battle is nothing but spin.
